Rarely visited , but among the most fantastic of
day excursions , is Jebel Matameer , not a mountain as most
people think of mountains , but an elevated deep sand basin
scattered with about 40 metamorphic sandstone bumps , each as
big as a rather small mountain .
The jeep turns south off the St. Katherine – Dahab road
atkilometer 60 down into Wadi –Valley – Genah Dahab and then up
into Wadi Matameer Dahab 20 minutes farther and hike begins .
The slope is strewn with sharp scree so good shoes are
recommended . At a fairly easy 200 meters up Matameer Dahab
mountain (800above sea level) a huge sandy basin opens out and
it is here that eons of erosion have created the matameer dahab
.
Can be reached in 4WD cars or on Camels .
